🌾Discover the latest updates on the ECOLOOP project, which focuses on optimizing the combination of renewable energy sources in rural areas.
Achieving Milestones and Innovations

Over the past year, the consortium has made significant progress by defining and consolidating various scenarios and use cases for the project. This effort has included establishing technical requirements and preliminary key performance indicators (KPIs), providing a strong foundation for the project’s first structuring phase. These achievements position the team to effectively pursue and accomplish the initiative’s overarching goals.

In Spain, a key pilot project is making substantial strides in estimating the production of digestate and biofertilizer. Efforts are also underway to secure the necessary permits for constructing a biogas plant in the municipality of Picassent. This initiative represents a critical step in advancing sustainable practices in waste management and renewable energy production, aligning with the project’s broader environmental objectives.

Meanwhile, ongoing data collection from multiple pilot projects is proving invaluable for refining the Support Decision Tool. This tool will enable farmers and foresters to make well-informed decisions by providing accurate, data-driven insights. By ensuring practical and reliable modeling, the tool supports informed land and resource management.

Additionally, the consortium is excited to announce the inclusion of a new partner, FOREKO. As an affiliated entity of FIBENOL in Estonia, FOREKO will play a key role in developing and demonstrating the Carbon Sequestration Tool. This innovative tool is designed to help farmers and foresters evaluate the CO2 sequestration potential of their farmland, empowering them to adopt more sustainable land management practices and contribute to global carbon reduction efforts.

Enhancing Agriculture with Big Data
Enhancing Agriculture with Big Data
As part of its big data analytics initiative within the ECOLOOP project, ETRA is collaborating with pilot partners to assess the data and IoT equipment requirements for each site. The foundation of this work is built upon the outputs from project foundations and living labs implementation, including use cases, requirements, and key performance indicators (KPIs). These elements serve as the starting point for understanding the specific needs of each pilot, alongside the ongoing planning and installation progress at the various locations. To keep all stakeholders informed, working documents for each pilot have been shared, facilitating the collection of the latest updates.

How does it work? The IoT ecosystem integrates the entire ECOLOOP framework, encompassing its pillars — energy, agriculture/forestry, and energy community services — along with the relevant tools and data. While each pillar features unique parameters, key shared data streams include solar irradiance, temperature, humidity, and soil moisture. By applying big-data analytics throughout the ECOLOOP value chain, the team aims to enhance decision-making for stakeholders in agriculture and forestry.

🎙️Albena: Pioneering Sustainability and Energy Innovation with ECOLOOP
🎙️Albena: Pioneering Sustainability and Energy Innovation with ECOLOOP

When you search for Albena online, you’ll find breathtaking images of a stunning vacation resort on the northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast. With its pristine beaches, fancy hotels, nature, and vibrant recreational areas, Albena is a dream destination for travelers. But beyond its stunning exterior, this ECOLOOP pilot site holds a deeper story—a commitment to environmental sustainability that sets it apart.

Under the leadership of Eng. Dimitar Stanev, Albena has become a trailblazer in adopting advanced technologies for energy optimization. As one of the pilot sites of the ECOLOOP project, the resort operates solar installations with a combined capacity of 2.4 MW, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and saving several hundred thousand euros annually.

Leveraging advanced software, Albena efficiently manages energy flows, minimizing dependence on external grids. Surplus energy is creatively repurposed, such as heating water for hotel use, exemplifying the resort’s dedication to sustainability.

Looking ahead, Albena plans to expand its investments in renewable energy and storage solutions, cementing its position as a leader in Bulgaria’s green transition. As Eng. Stanev aptly states, “The sun will continue to rise over Albena, and we’ll continue leveraging its power to drive sustainable growth.” In an exclusive interview, Eng. Dimitar Stanev shares insights about Albena’s innovative approach and role in the ECOLOOP project.
